At the eleventh hour, on the eleventh day, of the eleventh month – Remembrance Day – people around the world will observe a moment of silence, in honour and respect for the value of life, in the difficulties of conflict and war.
At this time, we stand together, to honour and respect those who paid the ultimate sacrifice of losing their lives, in service of preserving freedom. We also acknowledge and stand in support of brave servicemen and servicewomen, who were injured and survived conflict and war, in their deployment around the globe.
The moment of silence, at 11:00 am, marks the time when people hoped for a lasting peace, imagining an end to combat, feeling gratitude the artillery fell quiet and, in good faith and a spirit of compromise, in 1918, signed the peace agreement between allied forces and Germany.
Keeping a moment of silence and attending ceremonies and services allows for a change of pace, and the opportunity to reflect on the past, including in those parts of our cities with memorial sites.
Soldier’s Tower on St. George Campus of the University of Toronto and War Memorial Hall on the University of Guelph Campus, display the names of brave students that enlisted, many of whom were injured or lost their lives in WWI. Similarly, the cenotaphs at Old City Hall in Toronto, and in central squares in Brampton, Barrie, Scarborough, Oakville, the National War Memorial in Ottawa, and in cities and towns across Canada, pay tribute to the brave men and women, who gave their lives or were injured in ultimate service to their country. We remember all their service in the First and Second World Wars, Korean War, Afghanistan, in Peacekeeping missions worldwide, and as surviving veterans.
As YusApuY reflects on, and works diligently towards, collective action “In Service” of each other, community, and social justice, we also stand “In Solidarity”, this Remembrance Day, with those who sacrificed their lives and engaged in heroic efforts, on behalf of their fellow citizens, democracy, and freedom.
