The York University Staff Association (YUSA) sends our warmest greetings to our members, the broader university community, and workers nationwide in celebration of Canada Day. This day provides a vital opportunity to reflect on the shared privileges of living in this country, most notably our deeply held values of freedom, democracy, and the rich multicultural fabric that defines our society.
Yet a healthy democracy requires far more than simply voting every few years. It demands human dignity, systemic fairness, and ensuring that every individual possesses a meaningful voice, both in public office and throughout our daily workplaces. While we take pride in how far Canada has progressed, we must also candidly recognise that a long journey still lies ahead.
Countless working families are currently bearing the heavy burden of a severe affordability crisis, stagnant real wages, and underfunded public services. True freedom remains out of reach when regular people are forced to make impossible trade-offs between housing, groceries, and basic healthcare, or when systemic barriers continue to marginalise vulnerable communities. Democracy itself is weakened whenever corporate or institutional agendas are prioritised ahead of the well-being of regular citizens.
This ongoing struggle is precisely where the labour movement plays its part. The history of Canada is fundamentally tied to the history of organized labour. Nearly every major social advancement we now view as standard, whether it is the eight-hour workday, the weekend, paid parental leave, or robust workplace safety standards, was hard-won by unions. Organised labour has never focused solely on its own membership. We actively fight for the collective advancement, equity, and protection of all Canadians.
As a proud affiliate of the Confederation of Canadian Unions (CCU), YUSA remains deeply dedicated to this mission. We firmly believe that unions will always be central to the essential work of building a better, more inclusive country. We will continue to stand on the front lines for genuine social justice, systemic equality, and stronger protections for workers. We will champion an economy where prosperity is shared fairly, where diversity is truly celebrated, and where the right to unionise is protected.
Let us approach this Canada Day not just as a holiday, but as a moment for solidarity and renewed purpose. Working together, we can bridge the gap between our current reality and the fairer Canada we know is fully achievable.
