On this Canada Day, the York University Staff Association (YUSA) celebrates the values that truly define our nation—fairness, equality, solidarity, and justice for all working people. While July 1 marks a historic moment in the formation of our country, it is also an opportunity to reflect on what kind of Canada we want to continue building together.
Canada is more than its symbols and ceremonies—it is the people who make it strong. It’s the public sector workers who keep our universities running, the healthcare workers who care for our families, the postal workers who keep us connected, and the countless others who build and sustain our communities. Workers are the backbone of this country, and it’s through our labour, resilience, and collective voice that progress is made.
This Canada Day, let’s celebrate not just where we’ve been, but where we’re going—toward a more just, inclusive, and compassionate Canada. Let’s honour the workers who paved the way and commit ourselves to organizing for the Canada we all deserve.
From all of us at YUSA, Happy Canada Day.
