With the temperatures increasing, we want to ensure members understand their rights and the steps to take if workplace temperatures become too high.
While there is no legislated maximum indoor temperature in Ontario, the recommended office temperature guidelines are:
- Winter: 20.0°C – 23.5°C
- Summer: 23°C – 26°C (generally not exceeding 26.1°C)
Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the employer must take every precaution reasonable to protect workers’ health and safety when temperatures exceed these guidelines.
If Your Office Is Too Hot
If workplace temperatures are outside the recommended range but you feel it’s still safe to work:
- Inform your manager so they can investigate.
- Notify the Work Control Centre at x22401 if temperatures persist outside 20°C – 26°C.
- If the issue is not resolved, contact a YUSA Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) worker member which you can find at jhsc.info.yorku.ca and copy yusapuy@yusapuy.ca.
What the Employer Should Do
To reduce heat risks, management may:
- Provide fans or portable AC units
- Allow extra breaks
- Relocate staff to cooler spaces
- Permit temporary remote work where possible
Members with health conditions that make them more sensitive to heat may also request accommodation or relocation.
Right to Refuse Unsafe Work
If you believe the heat is putting your health at risk, you have the right to refuse unsafe work.
- Notify your manager and explain why.
- Move to a safe location, such as a cooled building on campus.
- A YUSA Health and Safety Committee member can assist you with the process.
If you have questions or concerns, please contact your local JHSC worker member or email yusapuy@yusapuy.ca.
