Benefits

Right now, YUSA Unit 2 members have no benefits coverage.
While full-time staff and students at the university have access to benefits, Unit 2 members must pay out of pocket for medical expenses.
That means no coverage for things like:
- Prescription drugs (including oral contraceptives)
- Dental care
- Vision care
It’s unacceptable that one of the largest universities in Canada provides no basic benefits coverage for hundreds of its employees.
The cost is small and the university can afford it
We estimate the total cost of providing benefits to all Unit 2 members would be less than $200,000 per year which is less than the salary of many managers at the university.
To put that in perspective: the university’s annual operating budget is $1.2 billion, so benefits for Unit 2 would cost only 0.01% of the university’s budget.
What we’re fighting for
Our benefits proposal includes coverage similar to the current student health plan for essentials like:
- Prescription drugs
- Dental services (including routine cleanings)
- Eyeglasses and contact lenses
