The YusApuY Executive Board remains committed to transparency and full disclosure of the election protests, the investigation into the protests, and the Report that has been issued by the investigator, Beth Symes. Having an election protested is unprecedented in the history of YusApuY. The protests alleged policy and Constitutional irregularities including ten specific allegations. We appointed Beth Symes, a neutral third party labour lawyer with nearly 40 years of experience (and no prior relationship with YusApuY) to conduct the investigation on our behalf, in order to ensure a fair and impartial review of the allegations. Her costs to investigate and provide a final report were $28,282.21.
We want to reassure members that the findings of the report conclude that in the opinion of the investigator, there were no breaches of the Constitution or the Elections Policy that affected the outcome of the election of the 2017 officers. In order to ensure complete transparency, the Executive Board feels strongly that all members of the union should have access to the full report for your own review. The full report was circulated via our listserv, is available on this website, and will be mailed to members on leave.
Despite there not being any Constitutional or policy breaches that impacted the election results, Ms. Symes made a number of recommendations including both policy changes and possible Constitutional change. The YusApuY Executive Board has accepted all of the recommendations made by Ms. Symes and we have begun to work on an action plan to ensure that all recommendations will be enacted in as timely a manner as possible. We will be keeping you up to date on our progress through messages such as these on behalf of the entire Executive Board, and of course, through the President’s Perspectives and at our annual membership meetings such as the budget meeting in March.
The YusApuY Executive Board, elected Officers and office staff continue to work diligently on behalf of all members and we look forward to sharing our work with you as we strengthen our policies and Constitution for the betterment of our union and all our members.
Yours in solidarity,
2017 Executive Board
