We are pleased to announce that there have been important updates to the process for claiming medical cannabis under your Sun Life Group Benefits plan. The language regarding medical cannabis coverage has been updated to improve claim approvals and is effective as of February 3, 2025.

Key Changes:

  • If a claim for medical cannabis is denied through the standard adjudication process, Sun Life must approve and reimburse the claim up to $1,500 per year, provided the claimant submits:
    1. A completed Health Canada Medical Document authorizing the use of medical cannabis.
    2. A prescription from a medical doctor or nurse practitioner confirming medical necessity.
    3. A receipt from a Health Canada-authorized licensed producer, including the patient’s name, the dispensary name, and confirmation of full payment.

Important Notes:

  • The change ensures that approved claims align with the updated language in the agreement.
  • Coverage applies only to medical cannabis products regulated under the Cannabis Act, such as dried/fresh cannabis, cannabis oils, edibles, topicals, and extracts.
