There are some very important things about your rights at work that you should know as a YUSA member. These are just a few of the rights that YUSA members have through our collective agreements.
• Before you retire that you can request to have a York email account to stay in touch with your friends and coworkers. To request a retirees email account please send an email to: accounts@yorku.ca.
• That our benefit plan covers paramedical services such as a massage therapist, chiropractor and naturopath. You can find an extensive list of all your benefits provided by Sun Life Financial at their website,
• That you are allowed to take time off in hourly allotments or less. Vacation days, personal days and even your sick time can be used this way.
• That once you submit a vacation request, a response by your manager should be in your inbox in 20 working days. (see article 28.04)
• You can set an alarm on your Lotus Notes to make sure you take regular breaks throughout the day. Those 7.5 hours of breaks and lunch time a week are a great opportunity to relax and recharge.
• If you have submitted your notice to retire, you may be entitled to additional days off for accumulated sick leave (see Article 35.01) OR an extra week of vacation time (see Article 35.02)
• That all YUSA members are entitled to a one time meeting with a financial advisor/planner before you retire…..compliments of your union.
• Every YUSA employee should have a copy of their Job Summary. Can’t remember where you put it or not sure if you ever received one? Send an email to Shamie Beharry in Compensation at beharrs@yorku.ca.
• All YUSA members are entitled to go to a job posting interview and or testing without loss of salary or benefits….at York University of course (see Article 12.01(c) in your YUSA contract.
• That YUSA jobs are posted here. Remember to bookmark it for easy access the next time.
• If you have applied for a YUSA job that was posted you will be notified by HR of the hiring decision no later than 10 working days following the decision being made. Didn’t get the job? You can request in writing the major reason(s) for not being offered the position or not being granted an interview. See article 12.02(n).
