Every year on Labour Day, the York University Staff Association (YUSA) pauses to honour the dedication, resilience, and fundamental contributions of our members and the broader working class. Labour Day is far more than a long weekend. It is a vital moment to reflect on the historic victories that built our movement and to renew our commitment to the ongoing struggle for equity, fairness, and justice in the workplace.
The rights we often take for granted, such as the five-day workweek, health and safety protections, fair wages, equal pay for work of equal value, and the right to collective bargaining, were not handed down as gifts. They were hard-fought victories won through the bravery, solidarity, and relentless determination of working people. As a union representing the administrative, technical, and professional staff who keep York University running, YUSA knows that our institution thrives because of the essential labour of our members. Post-secondary education is a public good, and defending it means defending the rights, dignity, and economic security of the workers who sustain it.
Yet, the fight for workers’ rights is never static. Today, working people face mounting economic pressures, rising costs of living, workplace precariousness, and systemic attempts to erode public services. In this environment, true fairness requires an unwavering commitment to equity and inclusion. We recognize that labour rights cannot be separated from social justice.
A fair workplace is one free from discrimination, where women, racialized workers, Indigenous peoples, 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals, workers with special needs, and all marginalized communities are protected, valued, and empowered. Solidarity means ensuring that no one is left behind in the pursuit of dignity and respect.
As we celebrate Labour Day, we carry forward the legacy of those who came before us. We stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies across the labour movement to demand fair compensation, safe working conditions, transparent governance, and workplaces built on mutual respect.
Today, let us celebrate our achievements, amplify our collective voice, and recommit to the enduring fight for economic democracy, social equity, and a better future for every worker.
